Why is fish oil purity important?
We have no one but ourselves to blame for the toxic contaminants
found in fish oil. These toxins include mercury (from
the
burning of coal), PCBs (used in electrical insulation), and
dioxins (the active ingredient in defoliants used in the Vietnam
War). Although production of PCBs and dioxins has long
been banned, they rarely break down and thus accumulate in the
marine food chain that ends with fish and affects the purity of
fish oil.
These toxins affecting fish oil purity are known carcinogens and neurotoxins. In fact, the levels in the Eskimo population, who consume large amounts of fatty fish rich in EPA and DHA, are well above the safety standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO), and recent studies indicate that they are approaching the upper limits of safety in the Japanese population.
Here lies the problem - how can we remove these toxins to ensure the purity of fish oil to obtain all the tremendous health benefits of EPA and DHA? Why Quality and Fish Oil Purity Matter

In addition to the standard manufacturer testing for every batch, we have enlisted the help of IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards), a non-affiliated third party and the internationally-respected source for fish oil analysis. IFOS scientifically tests and analyzes Sealogix. IFOS Testing
There are three internationally-accepted standards for testing
purity of fish oil and quality:
1. CRN (Council for Responsible
Nutrition)
2. WHO (World Health Organization)
3. IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards)
The IFOS standards includes all the tests required by the CRN
and WHO; however, IFOS imposes more stringent requirements for
passing some of these tests. Furthermore, the IFOS standards
also include additional tests not required by the CRN and WHO.
We believe this makes the IFOS standard the most comprehensive
measurement in the fish oil industry for quality and purity of
fish oil. The highest rating that can be attained from IFOS is a 5-Star

PCB Levels
Less Than 50% of CRN Standard PCB's are a group of manufactured organic chemicals, which have been used widely as coolants and for other electrical equipment. Because PCB's build up in the environment and cause harmful health effects, the manufacture of PCB's stopped in the U.S. in 1977. Since PCB's do not break down easily, they are now found throughout our environment. As a consequence, PCB's can be highly concentrated in the fish found in waters contaminated with even low levels of these carcinogens. |

Dioxin and
Furan Levels Less Than 50% of WHO Standard
Dioxin and furans are environmental contaminants that are formed as a result of the combustion process, like waste incineration and from burning fossil fuels. These chemicals are released into the atmosphere, and as a result they can be found in the plants, animals and fish that we eat. Dioxin is the most toxic man-made chemical, and furans are about a tenth as toxic. These contaminants are human carcinogens, which can also cause non-cancer health effects. |
